Kalyani Chalukyas

Western Chalukyas are also called as Kalyani Chalukyas as they ruled from the capital Kalyani. Taking the advantage of weakness of Rashtrakuta rulers the feudatory chief of the Rashtrakutas Tailapa II defeated the last Rashtrakuta ruler Karka II in 973 A.D. and declared independence. Tailapa II annexed Manyakheta in 973. He had the titles of Ahavamalla, Bhuvanaikamalla. He defeated Paramara Munjaraja and imprisioned him. When Munjaraja tried to escape from prision he was caught and hanged.

The rivalry between Paramaras and Kalyani Chalukyas became an obstacle for the expansion of Malwa kingdom. Kalyani Chalukyas involved in the heriditary quarrels of Vengi Chalukyas and supported Vijayaditya VII to ascend the throne. Tailapa II was succeeded by Satyasraya. During the reign of Satyasraya, Kalyani Chalukyas expanded their territory upto Roddanadu. Satyasraya was succeeded by Vikramaditya. Next to him Ayyana II and after Ayyana II, Jayasimha II ascended the throne in 1015. Jayasimha II had the title of Jagadekamalla. Belgaum inscription says that he beheaded the paramara king Bhoja. Jayasimha II was defeated by the Chola king Rajendra Chola in the battle of Moosangi. Jayasimha II sent his army against Vengi supporting V ijayaditya VII to the Vengi throne. The Cholas supported Raja Raja Narendra and sent army to rescue Raja Raja Narendra in Kalidindi War.

Jayasimha II was succeeded by Ahavamalla Someswara(Someswara I). Someswara I defeated Paramaras and annexed Dhara city. Someswara I got victory in Koppam war that took place in 1050 A.D. The Chola king Rajadhiraja was died in the Battle of Koppam. But Someswara I was defeated in the Battle of Kudalisangam.

Someswra I was succeded by Someswara II. Next to him, V ikramaditya VI ascended the throne in 1078 A.D. and started a new era called V ikrama Saka. As per Sitabaldi inscription and Anumakonda inscription, V ikramaditya ruled the territory between the south of river Krishna and river Kaveri. After V ikramaditya VI Kalyanai Chalukya kingdom was ruled by Someswara III, Jagadekamalla II, Tailapa III and Jagadekamalla III. Someswara IV was the last ruler of Kalyani Chalukya kingdom. The rule of Kalyani Chalukyas came to end with the declaration of independence by the Kakatiyas.
